IDMF039: Sounds for Skeletons

IDMf #039. It’s been a while in the making. After various delays and hilarious in-house heartbreaks the IDMfNetlabel is proud to present Sounds For Skeletons.

The first thing to note is that Sounds For Skeletons has a promo video compiling various pieces of footage sent in by IDMf members. Over 18 minutes in length, the video moves through the footage in a style sometimes reminiscent of 60′s psychedelia with its violent colours, sometimes chaotic with its sudden edits and fast pace, sometimes ambient with the way it slows down and relaxes you into its dreamy visuals and gentle music.

We might not be here to talk about the video but it’s a good reflection on its sibling album. As with any open genre compilation there is variety expressed through different artists offering songs of different types of music, this variety strung together with a common thread. With a forum and a netlabel specializing in electronic music one could often take that to be the very thread in question but there’s something else. Whilst offering a mixed palette a lot of these songs seem to share a commonality in two unique and particular things, the first being a slight exotic feel both in the composition and the sounds and textures that have been created. The second is a penchant towards noisy, abrasive sounds, not so aggressive that they’re tough listening but enough to create an interesting contrast to the gentler side of things.

But don’t take my word for it. It’s free. Free music. Go and grab it, go watch and listen and see and hear and decide for yourself what threads run through this great compilation.

IDMf037: .μ-metik – Paths

Imagine if someone took you to a perfectly relaxed environment where they could soothe your tensions and ease you into a relaxed and peaceful, meditative state. Just as you fall into a blissful slumber you suddenly wake up again, only you haven’t really woken up, you’re still unconscious, just lucid, unexpectedly thrown into a dream where the world around you is a giant computer and its various components make wonderful sounds that match the
glitchy beats and the futuristic synths.

So imagine now that you are in these two different places. You walk through computer glitch city where everything is dark science fiction but you look to the sky and all you can see is the room where you sleep. In that room, the unconscious you can hear the birds singing outside. The unconscious you can hear rainfall, someone playing the piano, someone playing a guitar.

This is what μ-metik’s Paths feels like, being lost in a computer dream as the sleeping you feeds a subconscious stream of natural sounds down from the sky. Paths can’t easily be categorised to a single genre. The contrast of the acoustic instruments to the electronic glitches and synths creates a unique imagery. The recordings and gentle ambience next to the dark broody pulse of the music and a sound design all its own, μ-metik has hit on something that demands your attention.

Tracklist:

      1) Path/01: Small Paths Towards Solitude
      2) Path/02: Long Paths Towards Autonomy
      3) Path/03: Unmeasurable Paths Towards Essence
      4) Revealing
      5) Fragment/01

IDMfBT001: Super Ready Ever Fresh

IDMf Beat Tapes is here after much planning!

The community-based sub label of the IDMf Netlabel is prepared to finally have it’s debut release and we’re kickstarting this series of beat tapes with hip hop.

Super Ready Ever Fresh is a proof that hip hop is alive and well in the community by bringing out the best talent IDMf has to offer. Inspired by the LA beat scene that has taken the world by storm, what better way is there to kickstart the Beat Tapes series than with shuffling drums, warms synths and more crackle than a forest fire. The variety of styles and careful arrangement help create more than just a compilation of loose beats, but a full on narrative. From flying through space, exploring mysterious worlds to finally finding astral bliss, this debut release will certainly take you for a ride and get you ready for many great things to come. Super Ready Ever Fresh is just a start.

IDMf036: No Foors – Oil and Blood

Oil and Blood opens with a mean soundscape of noise and abrasive textures, landing in a wonderfully obscure realm between the quietly hypnotic and the jerkingly rhythmic. This release soon punches through an array of pieces that really get you moving, its delight and intrigue resting in how it makes you feel the need to dance to its beat whilst it simultaneously takes your mind away to the surreal, futuristic places of all your favourite science fiction. Boldly throwing out snares made of static and fuzzy basslines that hit your ears like you took a stethoscope to the dancefloor, this is heart pounding, foot tapping techno not to be missed.

IDMf035 VA – This is good tea

Another exciting compilation from those wonderful aural pioneers of IDMf, This is Good Tea rolls through a compelling array of carefully sculpted, perfectly crafted masterpieces. Often tied together by glitched beats, unique rhythms, haunting echoes and beautiful melodies, the netlabel again proves it can offer a release that boasts both variation and coherency, no song out of place despite the diversity of the palette.

One thing that seems to run across all the songs on this compilation is the dreamlike nature of them. In terms of composition, sound design and on a whole a brilliant example of quality musicianship this whole album evokes all sorts of emotion and at times conjures up the most interesting of imagery in the listener’s mind.

Prepare yourself for a treat. This really is exceptionally good tea.

IDMf034 – 80Hz Sacred Surplus

After months of cold weather there’s a rumbling in the air warming us all up!!
IDMf Netlabel is proud to present this compilation featuring the very best music from the IDMf bass community. There’s something for everyone in here from deep ambient Bass warblings to floor killing DnB, Dubstep, breaks and of course IDM!
Showcasing talent familiar to the label and new artists alongside this is one hell of a heavy release, so set your subs to max and warn the neighbours – The IDMf Bass crew is here!

IDMf033 MOSKRA – MOSKRA ep

With an uncompromising focus on depth and weight Moskra delivers perhaps one of the darkest releases the IDMf netlabel has ever had the pleasure of releasing. From his studio in Tallahassee FL, Moskra has churned out a mix of deep throbbing kicks, creeping tribal rhythms and oppressive sub frequencies to make up this 4 track EP. Reserve these tracks for the deepest sessions on the dancefloor and dim the lights..

IDMf032 Concierge_Weetr – The glass is breaking

Hailing from Berlin Concierge_Weetr is a captain of a strange and haunted ship that sails in an ocean inside his own head. Always surrounded by computers and instruments, he developed his sound art as a personal statement to the broken world we live in.
His music is carefully arranged with nervous hand crafted beats which tenuously hold the rhythm together while chilling, eerie and brooding synths pulse and flow around them. What first sounds like a random smattering of noises soon coalesces into infectious beats with bass to fill the dancefloor.

IDMf031 Atra Aeterna – The Black Fog EP

Atra Aeterna will be no stranger to fans of melancholic cinematic inspired electronica, having his first release on the IDMf Netlabel imprint on the now classic IDMf003 – Mind Tree compilation.

Atra Aeterna is the solo musical project of Zack Mitchell, who creates haunting, cinematic pieces that blur the lines between electronic and classical music.
The Black Fog is no exception to this melancholic yet highly evocative style, eerie melodics and a melody to die for, this is a trip into a beautiful scene of emotion.
With remixes from IG88 in his tripped out style with added vocal highlights, to the electronic minimalistic soundscapery of Automageddon, alongside more upfront pieces form Eode and Stereoglyph this is one amazing release showcasing the RAW talent of all involved.
As a special bonus – Atra Offers up an acoustic version of The Shadowlands taken from his album Machinations available here http://atraaeterna.com/

IDMf030: Anodyne Industries – Make Your Body A Darker Weapon

Anodyne Industries returns to the IDMf Netlabel to release a very special remix ep, “Make Your Body A Darker Weapon”.

Hailing from Oakland California, Anodyne Industries (Aaron King) has carved out a signature sound of deep thinking technical breaks and bass. The EP features his Drum & Bass remixes of “Make It Darker” and “Body Weapon”, the winning submissions from his recent remix contest by IG88 and Lysdexic, and his new unreleased dubstep single, “After The Storm”.

IDMf023: Yibbon – Dollarstore EP

With great tenderness and care, ambient IDMf artist Yibbon graces the ears of his listeners with lavish soundscapes and dream-inducing, celestial stagnancy. IDMf019: When Power Stars Collide – Attraction to Light

Genre: Melodic IDM

Swift chromatic melodies and bright harmonics are a defining feature to Attraction to Light, When Power Stars Collide’s debut album on IDMf. Layered across glitchy rhythms, it echoes the melodic IDM spirit of Benn Jordan and the like, rounding out an album full of as much color as the cover suggests.

When Power Stars Collide is one of the youngest new artists on the IDMf Netlabel.

IDMf018-S: Fidelium – God Tank

Featured on the recent IDMf Netlabel compilation IDMf010: Between the Silence and Story, the track “God Tank” by Fidelium is a gritty, electronic-orchestral conquest displaying a film-epic melodic scheme layered over a hard-hitting beat. Immediately following the original version are four remixes by some of my [Fidelium] most-respected and favorite artists on IDMf (a tiny handful out of a very large amount.) Each interpretation is a whole new variation of the spirit and theme behind “God Tank”, telling a completely fresh story from the same sets of sounds, to the point that I consider this to be God Tank: Movements I-V. It is a fantastic balance of color, and I am extremely pleased with the creativity behind each remix.

The orchestra tunes and the double basses begin the steady rhythm of “God Tank” and at the opening of the original mix we are given the theme: a pizzicato arpeggio circulated by chromatic tones and longing, distant bells. From tuneboxii, who is known for his nasty, experimental dubstep tracks, the listener is taken down a different path. With syncopated tempos and tasteful distortion, tuneboxii twists “God Tank” into a gyspy-electronic anthem. After tuneboxii’s mangling of an already-mangled piece comes Toronto Is Broken’s dance flavor with a pumping sub bass and future garage rhythms. After this club-worthy explosion by Toronto Is Broken, IG88 brings us back down into his beautiful ambient mist, with a guitar-laden ballade that transitions into a foot-tapping hiphop track without warning. Finally, the epic recapitulation is handled by the perfect man for such a job: The Verb. “God Tank” is thus taken to a new height with this stellar composition and skillful craft.

It is with these four remixes that I feel that “God Tank” is complete. I am very lucky and proud to have my work enhanced by these talented producers, and I am overly obliged and happy to release this collection through IDMf for you, the listener.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, step right up! The Ringmaster is calling you into the tent, because the Orchestra of Symmetry is tuning up and about to begin. Mr. Steed brings us into his Orwellian dystopia, telling a tale of tribulation and freedom with tasteful melodies, adventurous lyrics, and an interesting over-all theme in this socially-relevant music cycle.

Ben Steed’s debut “Anywhere But Here” on IDMf is nothing less than a powerful addition to the library, and it is an album worth playing again and again.

Sean Forsythe – :10:
Dustin Kessler – Rewir3d

01 Infinite (3:41)
02 Empty (3:50)
03 Unstable (3:52)
04 Ruptured (3:59)
05 Damaging the Cycle (4:27)
06 13 (5:05)
07 Resolute (3:52)
08 Pathogen (4:18
09 Sick (4:07)
10 In Hallow (5:24)

This two artist release stays true to its name. The first half of tracks done by artist Rewir3d set up the bleak and distorted stage for what the rest of the album will be. Rewir3d weaves crunchy trip hop beats into soaring leads seamlessly then adds some glitch to keep the progression fresh. His down tempo style never slows in pace as he fills the stereo spectrum with haunting background ‘scapes and sounds blending genres as much as he blends sound design, which is only matched by his attention to detail.

:10: picks up the second half without skipping a step, as you bathe in the distortion, glitchy breaks pound the head and bounce over the strings and one barely has time catch their breath between tracks. Industrial dance floors will not stop moving until the speakers are blown or the ears bleed from :10:’s stark, unforgiving sound. What you are left with is the soundtrack to your own nightmare, but a nightmare you’ll want to push through.

Both artists do a great job gluing their harsh sounds to beautiful atmospheric pads. Aphotic means growing in the absence of light and while the light barely shows up in this release they do hint at its existence and beckon the question, what is there in the absence of light? The answer is buried deep within the background drones and melodies. Turn out the lights, turn up the speakers, I give you Aphotic.

IDMf012-S: Me At 12 – Odd

Created over a period of 2 days in the mid 2000s, Me At 12′s Odd is a journey into sound by a then 12ish-year-old Frank Zappa and Classic Rock enthusiast. Armed with an eMac with a built-in microphone, Audacity, and a variety of musical instruments, the child proceeded to screw around, producing this nearly unlistenable sonic assault that is now available through IDMf, and is the first of the netlabel’s single (-S) series.

The long-awaited tenth volume off the IDMf netlabel [http://label.idmforums.com] is one of the best yet. Including previously released artists as well as new talent, this compilation once again displays the incredible skill, variety, and collaborative efforts of like-minded electronic music producers who contribute to the netlabel and its adjacent forum. IDMf010 explores the musical idea of balance, each track complimenting the other in a way that creates a seamless album of electronic music touching on (and sometimes crossing over) multiple genres: breaks, dnb, dubstep, IDM, ambient, downtempo, industrial, and more. This compilation pulls us in from the beginning and carries us through an aural coliseum where the combating forces of sound move us into the eye of the storm, until silence takes over and the story lives on.

This ground breaking adventure, authored by Anodyne Industries and proudly presented by the IDMf Community, is the latest installment in the growing library of solo releases the collective has to offer.

IDMf:Industrial presents Divergence

di·ver·gence n. – 1. Departure from a norm, deviation.
2. Mathematics: Failure to approach a limit.

It begins like waking from a dream into a nightmare, and carries the listener through a fractured path designed and constructed through the creativity of artists with the desire to surpass themselves. Created by members of the electronic music production community – IDMforums, in honor of the Industrial, EBM & Power Electronics section, not just as another industrial compilation, but as a tribute to a style of music that has inspired us to explore and reimagine sound through our own vision. Contained within the tracks in this compilation are echoes from not only the past and present of industrial music, but perhaps the future as well.

Divergence features 14 tracks from a diverse selection of artists from the IDMforums community, including new and exclusive tracks from Keef Baker, Endif, Tapage, Unterm Rad, and more. Both downloadable packages contain excellent full album artwork by Sean Forsythe, and short bios of all included artists in a single PDF document for your convenience.

IDMf004 – Length and Brecht (Remixed) transcends the definition of remix album by sounding more like a four movement orchestral piece with a recurring theme: the leitmotif of a woman’s voice singing out in a layering of beautiful, ambient tones.

Reworking Halogen’s blissful track into three alternatively distinct atmospheres; this latest release is a balance of consistency and change that enlightens the listener’s earlobes.
